Attraction Description:

Swayambhunath is a Buddhist temple also known as the Monkey Temple due to the large quantity of monkeys that live and roam freely around the site.

The temple is situated high on a hill about two kilometers to the West of Kathmandu. Swayambhunath has a mountain of steps to climb before reaching the main site, with monkeys entertaining the entire way to the top.

Upon reaching the top the spectacular view becomes apparent and the magical feel of the temples amazing structure and atmosphere is striking.

Around the back end of the main stupa is a monastery and if timed right the occupying monks can be found chanting which gives an unforgettable memory of Swayambhunath the Monkey Temple.

Attraction Review:

Swayambhunath the Monkey Temple is located about 2km West of Kathmandu which is a good walk or a short taxi/rickshaw ride away.

We decided to walk which took us through Nepalise communities and took about 30-45 minutes. Upon reaching the base of the Swayambhunath temple we were greeted with many smaller stupas with monkeys clambering all over them and 365 steps, one for each day of the year.

On the accent to the Monkey Temple we were greeted and pestered by the many traders that litter the sides of the 365 steps, it seems they are everywhere and inescapable!!

Upon reaching the top is the main stupa and amazing views over the Kathmandu valley. The feeling at Swayambunath is extremely calm and atmospheric, the smells of butter lamps and incense burning around the stupa and sight of the monkeys clambering over the temple and stealing the food that the Nepalise worshipers leave to the gods.

Around the back of the temple we entered the Monastery and were lucky enough to be present when the monks were chanting. With the sounds of the chanting, drums and long horns reverberating from the walls this was a great sight that will never be forgotten. All things considered the Swayambhunath temple is an amazing place to visit and one that shouldn`t be missed by anyone visiting Nepal, especially as it is so close to kathmandu which is the starting point for most of those that visit Nepal.
